A well-made candle should give you many evenings of warm light and fragrance—not a tunnel down the middle, a smoky jar, or a wick that becomes difficult to relight. The difference often comes down to a few small habits. Use this guide from the first burn onward to help your Illuminate Life candle burn more evenly, smell its best, and last as long as possible.
1. Make the first burn count
The first burn sets the pattern for every burn that follows. Leave the candle lit long enough for the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the vessel. This usually takes a few hours, depending on the candle size, room temperature, and where it is placed.
Why does this matter? Wax has a kind of “memory.” If you extinguish a new candle after only a small pool forms around the wick, it may continue melting within that narrow circle. That creates tunneling: usable wax remains around the sides while the wick burns downward through the center.
You do not need to wait for a perfectly liquid surface or push a candle beyond a safe burn time. The goal is simply a broad, even melt pool during that first session. Plan the first lighting for an evening when you can enjoy it without rushing.
2. Trim the wick before every burn
Before relighting, trim the wick to roughly 1/4 inch. Remove any loose, charred material from the top and make sure none of it falls into the wax. A wick trimmer works well inside deeper jars, but clean scissors are perfectly fine while the wick is still easy to reach.
An overlong or curled wick can create a flame that is too large. That extra heat consumes wax faster and may leave soot along the rim. A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a steadier flame, a cleaner vessel, and a more controlled fragrance throw.
Quick check: if the flame is unusually tall, flickering heavily, or producing visible smoke, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and try again.
3. Keep the candle away from drafts
Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from open windows, ceiling fans, HVAC vents, and frequently used doorways. Moving air pushes the flame to one side, which can create uneven heat and an off-center melt pool. It may also encourage smoking or cause one side of the vessel to become hotter than the other.
A calm location does not have to be hidden away. A coffee table, dresser, kitchen counter, or shelf can work beautifully as long as the candle has open space around it and remains within sight.

4. Limit each burn to about four hours
Long marathon burns can overheat the vessel and allow the wick to develop a large carbon cap. As a general rule, extinguish the candle after about four hours. Let the wax cool and become fully solid before trimming and relighting it.
Giving the candle a break keeps the wick easier to manage and prevents it from drawing more melted wax than it can burn efficiently. It also turns candle care into a natural rhythm: light it, enjoy it for the evening, then reset it for next time.
5. Store and retire your candle thoughtfully
When the candle is not in use, keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extended exposure to heat or sun can soften the wax, fade color, and reduce fragrance quality. Replace the lid only after the candle has cooled completely; this helps keep dust away without trapping heat.
Stop burning the candle when roughly 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom, or sooner if the vessel or product label instructs you to. A wick burning too close to the base can overheat the container. Once the remaining wax is cool, the vessel can be cleaned and reused for small household items, depending on the condition of the glass.
Your quick candle-care checklist
- Let the first melt pool reach close to the vessel edges.
- Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before every lighting.
- Burn on a level, heat-resistant surface away from drafts.
- Keep each session to approximately four hours.
- Let the wax cool completely before trimming or relighting.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings and debris.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or near children, pets, curtains, paper, or other flammable materials.
- Retire the candle with about 1/2 inch of wax remaining.
A better burn starts with a better candle
Every Illuminate Life candle is hand-poured in small batches with a coconut-apricot crème wax blend and a wooden wick. These simple care habits help those materials perform the way they were intended: an even melt pool, a comfortable flame, and fragrance that fills the room without rushing through the wax.
